OTTO KLAR - 1908-1994

Otto Klar was born in Vienna, Austria and came to South Africa in 1939.

He studied at the Vienna Academy of Arts and taught art in Pretoria. Numerous group exhibitions and some solo. He painted landscapes, figures, portraits and still lives, particularly flowers, with some abstract works in the mid sixties. Klar established a reputation by his command of oil techniques and descriptive landscape painting.

He did not sustain his movement towards abstraction and retreated back to descriptive figuration that has remained popular.
